Segways are For Dorks. Case in Point...

The Rio hotel loaned the Affiliate Summit West's co-organizer, Shawn Collins, a Segway to get around the massive hotel/convention area. Shawn was kind enough to let people try it out.

I think Steve Rosenbaum, the founder of Magnify.net, said it best when he wondered out loud while riding the Segway - "I wonder if it will ever not be dorky to ride on one of these?"

After watching this video of myself taking my first Segway ride, I think I know the answer...

Yup, dorky forever.

You are a master to learn the Segway so fast! Must be the shredder in you.

I'm a Segway commuter. I'm no longer stuck in traffic going to work, barely buy gas since I only use the car on weekends and rainy days, and don't have to pay for parking during the week anymore. When I have cargo or passengers, I use my car.

I'm curious what it is about a Segway that makes the author think it is "dorky"? Is it because it's electric? Is it because it has tandem wheels? or is it because when they put other people down with juvenile names, it makes them feel like a big shot?

I have saved over $4k in gas since I've bought my Segway to commute to work, and by Summer it will have paid for itself.

Segway sales keep growing, but slowly for 2 reasons: Segway Inc does not advertise, and there are consumers who read stuff like this blog who don't have any other frame of reference.

I'm sorry that the author of this blog is so insecure about their identity that they have to put people down with 5th grade name-calling. Jeez, Grow up.

30,000 people so far are using a Segway as an alternative when their car or bike might not be the best choice.

I'm sure bicyclists must have looked pretty strange when the bike was first invented, and I'm sure there were some insecure people who felt the need to put them down with juvenile name calling. The name back then wouldn't have been "dorky" back then because there were no Weird Al videos for their frame of reference.

When the author decides to graduate from the 5th grade and join the rest of the adults in the world, maybe they might be more tolerant of someone who is just using a transportation device.

HAHAHAHAHA! Whoa! Carlos! Relax!

The title of the post was an attempt at self deprecation - not trying to dis people who actually ride Segways. If you’ll notice, that was me in the video…I was calling myself a dork.

Still, I would say that at this point in time it is not easy to look “cool” riding a Segway, mainly because it is new and therefore a bit strange looking (your bicycle analogy was spot on). Also, the Segway has primarily been adopted by the geek community (which I am a part of) as a choice form of transport.

I applaud you in selecting the Segway as your primary source of transportation – and hopefully more people will do the same. It’s good for our environment, and I’m all for that.

I guess the big question is this Carlos – why so sensitive? It seems like you are letting out a larger frustration on this blog which was not really an attack on Segway riders, but a way to make fun of myself.

So what up Carlos? Do you need a hug?

Sorry for the sensitivity, but many of us Segway owners take a lot of grief just for choosing alternative transportation. We're subject to name calling and even physical attacks. No joke.

I'm relieved that your blog was a goof, but perpetuating the insulting misconception that Segway users are "Dorks" (see: your blog title) is something we're just flippin' tired of. Really.

We just want to get to work without bringing 2000 lbs of steel and gas along, and without being hassled in the bike lane and everywhere else.

Hey gang - sorry if I said something that hurt fellow Segway fans - not intentional.

In fact, I was talking to Dean Kamen just yesturday, and telling him how much I think that at slightly lower pricepoint the Segway could really change the world. He seemed to suggest there was a lower-pricepoint in the future, fingers crossed.

Thanks, Steve; great news about DK's plan to lower the price, something he's been against for years.

One of the marketing problems for Segway is overcoming the price point. The perception is that for $5000, some people expect the thing to also do the laundry and bake a pizza. Reliable, safe, clean and quiet transportation that requires no maintenance and costs eighteen cents a week costs that much. You get what you pay for. In the end, it winds up paying for itself in about 3-4 years, depending on how many car trips it replaces.

The 30,000 Segways sold so far were made in a small factory in Bedford NH. Honda could buy DK out and produce a 100,000 this year, or easily permanently shelve the Segway forever (to sell cars) saying that "elecrtrics aren't sellable in America right now".

I think that's why DK still builds his own Segways. Without his control over the Segway's future, there would be too many people who would pay well to see it go away.

One thing for sure: ask a person who bought a Segway what they think, and they will tell you how great they are. We would never give up this alternative, money saving and environmental sound way to travel.

Three facts about Segways exist: 1. People who buy 'em, love 'em. 2. They work great. 3. Sales continue to grow.

Try one. It's a great way to get there.
