The Welch Crew on Managing Creatives
I read Jack and Suzy Welch's column in BusinessWeek recently and they discussed one of the toughest management dilemmas out there - managing creative people. It turns out the online version of the column is an Podcast (very cool BusinessWeek), which is even better than the article since you can really hear how tough the situation is for even two seasoned business professionals.
If you have to manage creatives, if you work with creatives, or you are a creative yourself, give a listen to the Velvet Hammer.
Comments
I've been thinking about this post/video for awhile. I've come to the following conclusions:
1. Creatives are most effective when managed by one (think Art or Creative Director).
2. Creatives do need guidelines and milestones—and consequences for not meeting objectives.
3. Creatives don't need endless praise—constructive criticism helps you healthfully divorce yourself from your work...and no one likes to work with people who think their poo smells like roses.
4. Suzy Welch is a total asshat. Jack, on the other hand, is right on.
