Everest: Beyond the Limit – YOU MUST WATCH IT
Not a lot of time to blog tonight – I have two episodes of Everest: Beyond the Limit to watch.
No idea what I am talking about? You should. Everest is the most interesting show on TV right now.
I watched the first episode last night and it totally blew my mind. Did you know it takes two months to climb Everest – and it has nothing to do with the distance to the top? Me either. It turns out there are all these crazy things you have to do to keep yourself from dying from the altitude on Everest alone. On the first show the altitude has already killed a sherpa, almost killed an Indian climber, and made one of the camera man’s guts explode.
Insane.
Do yourself a favor and check out the Everest website, and then start watching it on Tuesdays on the Discovery Channel. It will make you go crazy.

Cool post. Some of the accounts of Everest make me wonder why people want to climb that mountain. "Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster" by Jon Krakauer has some pretty harrowing tales.
Then a friend pointed out that I enjoy sliding down a sheet of ice at 30+ MPH on a pair of toothpicks (aka skiing). I guess it's not so alien after all.

For another take on the really bad 1996 Everest season (and a rebuttal to some of Krakauer's accusations), read Anatoli Boukreev's "The Climb." He was one of the paid guides for one of the expeditions that went really wrong. Whether you agree with Krakauer or Boukreev, both books are shocking and harrowing and probably just what you're looking for to read in the safety of your nice warm apartment.
Just goes to show, Chomolungma will have her revenge!

After watching this show I think I might have to read one or both of those books.
It blows my mind what people go through to get to the top of that mountain...
