Ronald McD. Tries to Pull a Fast One on the Blogosphere (Again)

Ah boy. Looks like these big companies don’t ever learn. McDonalds, my favorite company ever, has produced not one, but two fake blogs. Way to go folks – you rule. I will let the Consumerist give the full smack-down.

This is not the first time they have done this - some people might recall the Lincoln French Fry Blog. Of course McDonald's real blogs read like PR drivel, so maybe they should just give up.

Thanks to AdRants for the point.

Marketers Manage to Piss Off Second Lifers – No One is Shocked

There was a lot of talk at the Blog Business Summit about Second Life (check out the Wikipedia page for Second Life if you have no idea what it is)and the move of mainstream marketers to the Second Life world. A few people mentioned the Crayon Agency, which has decided to run their office in the Second Life world (since their employees are all over the world).

Many agencies have been dipping their toe into the Second Life world, and wouldn’t you know it, they have managed to start pissing people off. Who woulda thunk it? Just like WalMart pissing off the blogosphere with their fo’ blog. And now Ogilvy has managed to piss on all of the industrious Second Lifers by pointing out a ton of “firsts” in the Second Life world, while ignoring all of amazing things that have happened in Second Life for years.

The scary part? Missteps like this will make it harder for other, more informed companies to succeed in Second Life…which really sucks. I really wonder how many more of these screw ups the Second Life community will take before there is a full fledged backlash against “first life” companies.

From the looks of this blog post, not many more.

Marketers are such a-holes.

Oh wait…I’m a marketer. Crap.

[Semi-Unrealated Update: Seems like Second Life has some inflation problems as well. Thanks to Scoble for the point.]

Two Poos in the Night

I saw this on Adrants and have to share. Check out the first line of this article.

Did You Say Blogging? Phil Did.

Heading into day three of the Blog Business Summit - and I think people might be getting a little blogged out. That said, there have been some really cool sessions going on and I am surrounded by some of the brightest in the business.

I would give you details, but the thing about a blogging conference is that there are always people blogging about every session - so maybe I will try to get some links together for people to check out.

For a little blog humor, make sure you check out the latest PhilTube video - "Did you say blogging?" Hilarious stuff. Big up Phil.

Being Courteous at Conferences – The Blog Business Summit

I’m just going to throw this out there, since the lack of basic manners shown by a few people at the Business Blogging Conference is hurting my head.

Three basic rules for conferences by Mr. Punk:

1) People came to the conference to hear the speakers speak, not hear you talk about your latest project to your two best geek friends. If you came to the conference to hang with your peeps and play around on the Internet, that’s cool, but don’t do it in the room where the session is going on (people paid a thousand bucks to sit in that room).

2) Don’t take calls in the conference room – and turn of the ringer. It is unbelievable how many times this has happened…and we are only at the half way mark. Even if you think you are talking on the phone really quietly, people can still hear you, and you are annoying.

3) I dig that you are a working mother and all, but please don’t bring your infant to the conference. I am sorry, but burping your baby during a session that we have paid a good amount of money to attend is selfish and rude. Babies are great. Babies are beautiful. No baby hate here. But please, get a babysitter. I didn’t pay a grand to sit in a room with you and your baby.

Alright, I am feeling a little better. Not trying to be all whiny - the conference has been pretty good – and I am learning some good stuff. Calcanis totally threw it down in his Keynote. Buzz B. is the man. And yesterday’s session on video and podcasting was great. And I am in a community building session right now.

Just had to get that off my chest.

Cool Picture From Seattle

I am up in Seattle for the Blog Business Summit. I had a few minutes to sneak away to go to the Pike Place Market and check it out. Seattle seems like a pretty cool town and I am hoping to see more of it in the next couple of days.

Here’s a link to a cool picture I took in my practically abandoned Flickr account. Hopefully I will get some more pictures up soon.

Ghana Youth Photo Project

Check out this very cool video about the Ghana Youth Photo Project. Watching it really reminded me of the trip I took to Ghana – such wonderful people in an amazing place.

It's very cool to see non-profits like this one showing up as featured videos on YouTube. It shows that YouTube could have a deeper purpose that just entertaining...

Ms. Dewey Search Engine

If you need a friend when you are searching you might want to use the Ms. Dewey search engine. The good news is you get a cheeky companion when you search. The bad news is you get crappy MSN search results.

Funny enough, when I typed in “health insurance,” Ms. Dewey pulled out a bunch of condoms. Crazy.

Jack Kerouac on Blogging…

Alright, so Kerouac didn’t write anything about blogging…since he didn’t have the internet…or a computer. But I ran across an applicable quote in the book “On the Road” that reminded me a lot of blogging. The quote comes from the start of the book – where Dean is learning how to write from watching Jack…

He watched over my shoulder as I wrote stories, yelling, “Yes! That’s right! Wow! Man!” and “Phew!” and wiped his face with the handkerchief. “Man, wow, there’s so many things to do, so many things to write! How to even begin to get it all down and without modified restraints and all hung-up on like literary inhibitions and grammatical fears…”

That quote is key. Most of the people I talk to about blogging say something like “yeah, I would love to blog, but I am worried about not having anything to write” or “I want to start a blog but I am afraid of looking stupid because I’m not a good writer/not good with grammar/etc.”

If you fall into that camp, learn from Dean – there are so many things to write…get it all down without modified restraints and don’t get hung up in literary inhibitions and grammatical fears. That is SO key to blogging.

If you are on the fence about blogging, just stop worrying about it and start writing.

B-A-N-A-N-A-S

This video cracks me up – and if you have ever listened to any electroclash bands like FischerSpooner (here is a great example) – it will crack you up too.

Thanks to Mr. Harvey for the link. I'm glad you like chili.

Guy K’s Ten Questions with Polly LaBarre

I promised myself that as soon as I get done with the two business books I am reading right now I would read a book that has nothing to do with business. I was thinking about reading “On the Road” again…it has been a while.

But after reading Guy K’s Ten Questions with Polly LaBarre, co-author of the new book Mavericks at Work: Why the Most Original Minds in Business Win, I almost went back on my promise…almost.

The point I am trying to make here is that the interview is really good – so please read it.

Who Says PSAs Can’t Be Morbid/Fun

Working in the insurance industry can be a little, how you say, creatively challenging. Let’s face it, insurance, while a very good thing, is not exciting. Not at all.

I think the making a good public service announcement is a lot like trying to make insurance interesting and fun. Unless you can add a level of remarkability or entertainment, no one is going to want to watch your PSA. PSAs like the “Truth” anti-smoking campaign do a good job of pulling off entertainment and education.

Today our designer extraordinaire forwarded me a good example of an entertaining PSA website…although it is a bit morbid :)

Tire Go Home...

Design Vs. SEO - Can't We Be Friends?

I swear they can coexist – so does this person.

And Danny Sullivan explains the issue here:

Worthless Shady Criminals: A Defense Of SEO from me last year looked at precisely this breakdown between designers and SEO, examining why I think it happened and how terribly bad it is. It wasn't always this way and seems to have largely come from people understandings that SEO involves less savory tactics such as blog spamming.
In reality, designers really need to understand that search engines are like a third browser -- and in fact a far more popular browser used by more people than using Firefox. They will spend tons of time making sure a site works for IE or Firefox, even Opera. But no time to make sure that the browsers of search engines are going to be OK with it?
I've found this has worked when I've had to talk with designers in the past, especially when you're saying you aren't trying to wipe out good design but ensure it is ALSO search friendly -- which is often more human friendly and solves the "I built it but no one came problem."

Can’t we all just get along?

BMW’s Dream Factory

BMW Logo
If you know me you know I love business innovation and I love my BMW (wow, that sounded like a yuppie country song). So I was very excited when I saw the recent BusinessWeek article called BMW’s Dream Factory. The article explores how BMW has managed to remain a highly profitable, high quality and much envied auto manufacturer in a very competitive market. The conclusion, BMW is built to innovate. Find out how by reading the article.

Also, check out the interview with BMW chief-brand-designer Adrian van Hooydonk

Burn the Box…

From Tom Peters in Re-imagine!:

New Business, New Mandate

New times call for … a New Mandate. Shake free of the past - including past successes – and re-imagine your entire way of doing business. The point is not to “push the envelope” or to “think outside the box.” The point is … to rip up the envelope and burn the box.

My problem with both traditional phrases (other than their overuse): They suggest that there is an intact envelope or sturdy box from whose known borders we can simply step out. But the envelope is torn and crumpled, and the box has been run over by a careening 16-wheel truck.

IDEO and Design Thinking

I love IDEO – and I love reading about IDEO. IDEO makes me go crazy. So I was quite excited about U.S. News and World Report article on IDEO that came out this week. Take the time to read it if you don’t know about IDEO – and when you do think of how design thinking can apply to your business.

And while we are talking about design thinking, BusinessWeek has a report on the top design schools. Good articles there – and it talks about how top businesses are looking for design thinkers more than ever. Not a bad career path for you youngsters out there.

And on a totally unrelated note, the Carbon Black Rally has started. If you like high end cars, check it out and follow the rally.

Mind Maps, Holiday Inn and High Pitched Singers

These are a few of my favorite things for the last few days:

Mind Maps – you should try to use these when you are developing ideas at work or elsewhere. There was something about this is BusinessWeek last week. I tried mind mapping over the weekend on an idea I was working on and I was surprised at how well it worked.

Holiday Inn Unicycle Ad – I love this ad. So dry. So silly. It reminds me of a scene from Best in Show or Waiting for Guffman.

High Pitched Singing Guy – this is just silly, but enjoy the guy who looks like Sinead O’Connor and sings like a synthesizer.

Hope your Monday was good.
