Million Dollar Homepage – Seth’s Godin and Tom Peters Weigh In

Seth finally comments on the Million Dollar Homepage after Tom Peters posts his own comment.

Main point - Alex Tew’s Million Dollar Homepage business model is a great business model - for Alex Tew. The page has little value for advertisers, no chance of making a long-term difference in anyone’s world (except Alex Tew), and no chance of being repeatable (sorry SmashMyViper, looks like the experts are against you too).

Check out the posts – have a great day.

Hi,

I disagree with your conclusions, for the following reasons:

1. The whole advertising model on the Internet is based on the assumption that “targeting” is the same as “context”. For example, the assumption is that if a user searches for briefcases, a briefcase advertisement must be served, because the user is most likely to click on that advertisement.

2. What is ignored in Point 1, is the fact that the user will click on an advertisement if it interests him, EVEN IF it is in no way relevant to the context.

Originally, this is how advertising used to work, but with the advent of Adwords etc, this fact is being forgotten. For example, If I am a Soccer fan, I will click on Soccer Ads, even if they show up when I am searching for something else.

3. What is also ignored in Point 1, is the fact that there is a “Curiosity” element when ppl click on ANYTHING. The Million Dollar Homepage concept is testimony for this fact. Sometimes, ppl click on ads just because they are curious. Is there something BIG here that everyone has managed to ignore?

As an experiment, based on the Million Dollar Homepage Concept, we are trying to build a Compendium of Web2.0 companies, in Pixels, at http://www.web20milliondollarhomepage.com/.

The idea is simple: it will prove if Point 3 listed above is a huge market waiting to be tapped.

Do have a look, and let us know what you think.

i appreciate the points made by Srinivasan. however, if i put my consumer hat on, i look at these pages and think to myself, "it looks like a lite-brite". it's like trying to cut out a coupon from a graffiti wall. i wish you good luck Srinivasan, but i'll take my consumer dollars to a site i trust. peace.

I agree with Fantast that these pixel sites are like a needle in a hay stack when it comes to having your company stick out from the rest. That is why I like what Banners Bring Business is doing at http://www.bannersbringbusiness.com
They sell banner ads so that a person or companies ad can actually be seen when someone looks at the site. You also get more bang for your buck as an 88 x 31 banner cost the same as a 10 x 10 block costs on these other sites. I guess I just like this idea better.

Jobless Boy Launches A Website To Sell 10,000 Jeans On The Internet!

USA jobless boy has set his sights on earning himself a million dollars after thinking of a simple idea of selling brands new and used jeans on his homepage MoneyOrBox.com
He had been thinking of ideas on how to make a little extra money for himself but some of his ideas either never worked out or were just far too ambitious.
So far there are 28 jeans sold on the homepage which has netted him just $1300 but as visitors grow and more people hear about the site, no doubt more jeans will be added and he will progress towards his target of 10,000 jeans on his homepage and one million dollars in the bank.
You can view the website by visiting www.MoneyOrBox.com

I believe that Alex's site still generates some indirect value for advertisers at least by improving their visibility in search engines. It has a PageRank of 7 and many still continue to add links to it (by the way, this article has just added one link). So, getting the link from website with such a high PageRank for as low as 1$ it is clearly a reasonable investment. Good luck to all the copycats :)
