Holy Schmoley! Dust Off Your TiVo's
Looks like TiVo is smartly jumping on the iPod video and PSP portable video bandwagon by coming out with a way to transfer your TiVo recorded programs over to your portable player. See the Reuter's story here.
Hopefully the cable and dish companies will be able to follow suit. If they can do it at a reasonable price the demand for portable video devices will go through the roof.
I will probably still hold onto my money until I get one for free :)

TiVo is, unfortunately, on life support...
The problem with TiVo is the problem with most companies that start up a whole new market. They get complacent and rest on their laurels... then allow others to move in and either do what they do better, or just cheaper. Then they die.
TiVo had a great thing going when there wasn't any such thing as a "Comcast DVR" or "DishPlayer"... but now that there is, they're finding out that they just can't compete on price anymore. I retired my TiVo days a few days ago when we got Comcast HD Cable and the HD DVR. Would I have preferred a TiVo? Hells yeah... (the interface on a TiVo is top-notch...) but is there such a thing as an HDTV TiVo? Nope... unless you count the DirecTV HD DVR (which is a TiVo, but it works only with DirecTV and DirecTV doesn't have local channels in HD...).
So, while this is a cool idea (and one I hope the other DVR-makers will emulate) it ain't gonna save a company that kind of let the market pass it by.
Sad.
